Room and pillar (variant of breast stoping), also called pillar and stall, is a mining system in which the mined material is extracted across a horizontal plane, creating horizontal arrays of rooms and pillars. The ore is extracted in two phases. In the first, "pillars" of untouched material are left to support the roof overburden, and open areas or "rooms" are extracted underground; the ...
Room and pillar mining is still very common in underground coal mines, because it is very flexible and does not require a large capital expenditure for equipment like a longwall mining operation would. Room Pillar is so named, because pillars of coal are left standing to help support the roof of the mine.
Commonly accepted mining methods, such as longwall and room and pillar retreat, allow overburden to cave. This creates highly variable stress conditions that can be difficult to predict. From both the safety and production point of view, unplanned ground falls resulting from these conditions are unacceptable.
